News | Rotary indexers with impressive load capacity

Have you ever tried to move 1.5 tons of weight? Impossible you say? Merely routine for our small RS-50A rotary indexer. Now consider that the rotary indexer itself tips the scales at only 45 kg. Impressive, right? We couldn’t agree more. How does it pull this off? With the power of cycloidal gears! We let you in on the secrets that lie behind this power and the exceptional load capacity of our rotary indexers.

By comparison: 1.5 t - that is the weight of a small hippo, two adult dairy cows or a compact SUV. Formidable heavyweights: For the RS-50A, however, it’s a cinch. The small rotary indexer is capable of supporting axial loads of up to 1,500 kg – which translates to 3,300 % of its own weight of 45 kg. A feat of magnanimous proportions. And the secret behind this enormous load capacity? Cycloidal gears!

Rotary indexers with high load capacity for precise positioning

Cycloidal gears are specialists for high loads and jobs that require precise positioning – and they are the key components of our rotary indexers. Their special engineering allows these gear systems to transfer exceedingly high amounts of torque with ultimate precision and smooth operation – and with an ultra compact design. Power transmission by means of cams and rollers ensures virtually full contact and even distribution of forces within the gearbox, which produces high rigidity. The large integrated angular ball bearings absorb both axial and radial loads and bending moments, and also provide for high moment rigidity and resistance to impacts and overloading (up to 500 % of the rated torque). What is more, aside from reducing vibrations and inertia, the two-stage reduction principle allows for larger reduction ratios.

Large hollow shaft, large main bearing

The rotary indexers of the RS series furthermore boast a large hollow shaft. This makes it possible to incorporate a particularly large main bearing – a clear advantage that boosts load capacity. This feature is particularly ideal for applications that impose steep requirements on allowable moment and moment rigidity. Better yet, the hollow middle axis provides ample room for the space-saving storage of cables and hoses. The cast iron base allows for easy mounting on the floor and provides for high stability.

The RS-50A is the smallest member of our RS series. All in all, the product family for rotary positioning applications comprises five sizes – all of them are true powerhouses, delivering exceptionally high load capacity. The largest member of the product family is the RS-900A, offering a load capacity of 9 t, which equals the weight of a city bus, a crawler excavator or a small loaded truck.
