What does
acceleration torque mean?

The acceleration torque, or dynamic torque, is the moment, needed to overcome the inertia. It is the product of inertia and angular acceleration. There is a direct relationship between the acceleration time and the life of the gearbox. A reduction of the acceleration time causes a higher acceleration torque, but simultaneously also a lower maximum rotational speed. The average torque and therefore the life of the gearbox increase again starting at a specific point. In the case of a vertical axis of rotation, this is often the case at one-third of the cycle time; for a horizontal axis of rotation, this point is more difficult to determine.

Cycloidal gears enable much higher acceleration torques than comparable planetary gears. That is because of their special design. The contact of the cams to the pins installed in the case guarantees optimal force transmission, as opposed to the meshing of teeth in planetary gears.

Acceleration torque of up to 250 % of the rated torque

The acceleration torque of Nabtesco gears is 250 % of the rated torque. Cycloidal gears are designed for virtually no backlash force transmission with maximum rigidity and transmission precision. They enable fast acceleration and braking with no loss of precision, in addition to high-precision positioning with a hysteresis loss of less than one arcminute. Even at high acceleration torques and heavy loads, they guarantee pin-point positioning of assemblies, parts, workpieces and tools. In addition, their low inertia increases the energy efficiency of the application.

When the acceleration torque is doubled, the emergency stop moment is reached. High shock resistance – 500 % of the rated torque – guarantees maximum safety.

High precision combined with excellent dynamics

Fast and precise positioning without overshoot and oscillations: This capability is due primarily to the high torsional rigidity and flexural strength of the gear systems. Their excellent rigidity is the result of several factors, especially the design principle consisting of cams and rollers, as well as the integrated robust main bearing. The result is high precision together with excellent dynamics. That improves product quality and reduces costs.

Pin-point positioning with dynamic cycles

The high acceleration torque of cycloidal gears is very important for all highly dynamic handling and positioning applications, such as assembly, adjustment or packaging. Assembly and handling systems such as robots, pick-and-place units, magazines or indexing tables also benefit from the compact design, smooth operation and long life of the gears.
