Functional principle
Strain wave gears consist of just three components: Wave generator, flex spline and circular spline (circular spline). They are characterized by power transmission via an elastic element, the flex spline. This is a cylindrical, deformable steel component with external teeth, which takes on its elliptical shape when the wave generator is inserted. In combination with the permanent circumferential multiple-tooth meshing of the flex spline and circular spline, absolute freedom from backlash, exceptional transmission accuracy and high torsional rigidity can be achieved.
Structure
The wave generator is usually the drive element of the gearbox. It is inserted into the flex spline so that the teeth of the flex spline and circular spline mesh. The output can be via the flexspline or the circular spline. The external toothing of the flex spline has two teeth less than the internal toothing of the circular spline, thus enabling a transmission ratio.

A cylindrical rigid ring with internal gear teeth
A cylindrical, flexible, thin-walled steel component with external gear teeth
A hub with an elliptical outer contour on which a special, radially flexible ball bearing is mounted

Functionality
The elliptical wave generator deforms the flex spline via the ball bearing. The flex spline in turn meshes with the internally toothed circular spline in the opposite areas of the large elliptical axis. The rotary movement of the wave generator shifts the large elliptical axis and therefore also the meshing area of the teeth. As the flex spline has two fewer teeth than the circular spline, there is a relative movement between the flex spline and the circular spline by one tooth after half a revolution of the wave generator and by two teeth after a full revolution.
